Freshen Your Breath

Remedies for Halitosis

What would you feel if somebody had to turn away from you because your breath smells bad? Halitosis can have major effects in a person's social life. In most cases, bad breath is caused by the sulphur compound-causing bacteria that accumulate in the mouth. Several factors have also been linked to this condition such as the kinds food that you intake, smoking, having a dry mouth, and in extreme cases due to medical conditions such as lung, liver, kidney, or intestinal complications.

There is really no standardized way for you to check yourself for any bad breath . But you may lick the back of your hand, let it dry, and then smell it – for better or worse that is how your mouth smells. If you think you have bad breath , don't be alarmed because there are ways of getting rid of it.

Proper Brushing

Proper oral hygiene is still the best possible way to having a good-smelling breath. Make sure that you brush your teeth and tongue twice daily for two minutes. Use a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste for utmost cavity protection. Floss your teeth also because brushing alone will not clean all the food debris that is wedged in-between your teeth. Having a healthy diet that reduces plaque-causing bacteria proves also to be effective. Pinapple, yoghurt, cranberries and raw vegetables too help keeps your mouth healthy and odor-free.

A Glass of Water

Drinking a glass of water after eating and at any time when you feel your mouth is dry also makes a good habit. Try also to kick the habit of smoking for it makes your breath smell like an ashtray. Mouth wash will only mask your breath for only a short period as their effects do not last long and they are rather expensive. If you have dentures, make sure that you clean them thoroughly for they can also cause bad breath .

Consult Your Dentist

If the problem persists after a series of local remedies, then you better consult your dentist or dental specialist. Serious gum problems such as periodontal disease and gingivitis or any condition that needs extensive dental medications would need to be looked at by a professional. But if your dentist sees no dental fault in your mouth, then you might be referred to a doctor for medical evaluation. As mentioned above, halitosis maybe a symptom of a medical disorder in the lungs, liver, kidneys, and intestines.

Having a bad breath may not be consciously your own fault, but knowing that you have bad breath and not doing anything about it is another thing. Having a healthy and good-smelling breath is only a matter of lifestyle.
