What is Bad Breath or Halitosis?

Bad breath (foetor oris) is a disorder to the mouth which is characterized by a foul odor. This is a problem which has been plaguing most individuals. The recent term for this medical condition is oral malodour, and its popularity actually goes way back almost twenty-five centuries ago. This fact is proven by what Hippocrates has written. He stated that each girl should have a pleasant smell. This can be obtained and kept with the help of a mouthwash which is comprised of dill seeds, anise, white wine, and myrrh. Bad breath is also mentioned by Maccius Plautus (Roman dramatist).

The Composition of Halitosis

Halitosis is due to chemicals which smell very bad. Among these chemicals are: methyl mercaptan and hydrogen sulphide. These are the by-products which resulted from the bacterial breakdown of protein. As with the case of bad breath , the proteins are mainly obtained from the cells within the lining of your mouth. On the other hand, there are some cases which are due to dental plaque. Or else, it might be the result of food particles which are caught in the middle of the teeth.

The Source of Origin

There is an estimated 85 percent of bad breath cases, wherein the condition starts within the mouth. The most well known places are in the gap between each tooth; the surrounding areas of the gum margins; or at the area behind your tongue. There are some cases wherein the source of origin is the dentures. This goes especially when these are not cleaned all the time. On the other hand, some cases of halitosis may originate from your throat and your nose. This is common for individuals who like to eat garlic; or for individuals who are heavy smokers. The foul odor can also come from your gastrointestinal tract or from your lungs. The point of origin may also start from metabolic disorders like diabetes mellitus. However, the last two sources are rare cases of bad breath .

Be Aware of Your Own Breath

ou may not know that you have this problem unless someone tells you. When this happens, you will probably become embarrassed. One reason why you may not be aware of your halitosis is due to the fact that your senses have already adapted to a stimulus, which they are constantly exposed to. On the other hand, the main reason is due to the flow of air. Since the air from your mouth does not flow directly to your nose, you will not be able to smell your own breath.
